Introducing Lucy

July 24, 2009

Somehow during my elephant research and finding organizations on the net involved with elephants, I found out about Lucy. She’s a lonely, ill and unhappy elephant in Edmonton Zoo. How do I know? Here are some elephant facts.

. elephants are highly social creatures. they need other elephants around
. elephants walk 20 hours a day foraging for food
. they certainly aren’t used to Canadian winters and it does not resemble their way of life in the wild

The small confining place, the two hour walk a day and the lack of other elephants all add to the sadness of her situation. The zoo will give you a lot of excuses as to why she can’t leave; one is that she is too attached to her keepers (as someone who is very close to an elephant, I call bullshit. I love her, but I am not a replacement for her own kind). Another is that she’s too ill to travel, yet when outside specialists try to get a look, the zoo won’t let them.

As a Canadian, this story is very dear to me. I can’t believe it is fellow Canadians that are refusing to let her go. But it’s a money thing. The province of Alberta has regulations for zoos which state that animals must be kept in appropriate social groupings. She’s been offered a place at both of the two elephant sanctuaries in the States, where she could live out the rest of her days with other elephants and space and sunshine.

Here are some articles.

If you would like to help, please send an email to the mayor of Edmonton expressing your concerns and plea for her to go to the sanctuary. You can also sign this petition.
